Mailbox Monday

Mailbox Monday" is the brainchild of Marcia at The Printed Page.  Martha has set up Mailbox Monday on its own blog here:  http://mailboxmonday.wordpress.com/Hop on over, link up, and join the fun!

Every week we'll post about which books we have received that week (via mailbox/store bought). Everyone that agrees to participate will  try to visit each other's list and leave comments!  Everyone is welcome  to join! You can join at anytime and you DO NOT have to  participate every week.

I guarantee that you will add to your reading list by visiting the participating blogs!

I decided to start with a mix of some of my favorite genres/subjects, so it's a pretty eclectic blend!

The Battle for Room 314 by Ed Boland
The Battle for Room 314 by Ed Boland - EGalley for review through NetGalley - (The Book Depository // Amazon) - Release date:  February 9, 2016

Goodreads description:
In a fit of idealism, Ed Boland left a twenty-year career as a non-profit executive to teach in a tough New York City public high school. But his hopes quickly collided headlong with the appalling reality of his students' lives and a hobbled education system unable to help them: Freddy runs a drug ring for his incarcerated brother; Nee-cole is homeschooled on the subway by her brilliant homeless mother; and Byron's Ivy League dream is dashed because he is undocumented.

In the end, Boland isn't hoisted on his students' shoulders and no one passes AP anything. This is no urban fairy tale of at-risk kids saved by a Hollywood hero, but a searing indictment of schools that claim to be progressive but still fail their students. Told with compassion, humor, and a keen eye, Boland's story is sure to ignite debate about the future of American education and attempts to reform it.

Before the Fall by Noah HawleyBefore the Fall by Noah Hawley - EGalley for review through NetGalley - (The Book Depository // Amazon) - Release date:  May 31, 2016

Goodreads description:

From the Emmy, PEN, Peabody, and Golden Globe Award-winning creator of the TV show Fargo comes the thriller to read in 2016.

On a foggy summer night, eleven people--ten privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter--depart Martha's Vineyard headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: the passengers disappear into the ocean. The only survivors are Scott Burroughs--the painter--and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of a wealthy and powerful media mogul's family.

With chapters weaving between the aftermath of the tragedy and the backstories of the passengers and crew members--including a Wall Street titan and his wife, a Texan-born party boy just in from London, a young woman questioning her path in life, and a career pilot--the mystery surrounding the crash heightens. As the passengers' intrigues unravel, odd coincidences point to a conspiracy: Was it merely dumb chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something far more sinister at work? Events soon threaten to spiral out of control in an escalating storm of media outrage and accusations--all while the reader draws closer and closer to uncovering the truth.

Amid pulse-quickening suspense, the fragile relationship between Scott and the young boy glows at the heart of this stunning novel, raising questions of fate, human nature, and the inextricable ties that bind us together.

Keep You Close by Lucie WhitehouseKeep You Close by Lucie Whitehouse - EGalley for review through NetGalley - (The Book Depository // Amazon) - Release date: May 3, 2016

Goodreads description:

When the artist Marianne Glass falls to her death, everyone insists it was a tragic accident. Yet Rowan Winter, once her closest friend, suspects there is more to the story. Ever since she was young, Marianne had paralyzing vertigo. She would never have gone so close to the roof's edge.

Marianne -- and the whole Glass family -- once meant everything to Rowan. For a teenage girl, motherless with a much-absent father, this lively, intellectual household represented a world of glamour and opportunity.

But since their estrangement, Rowan knows only what the papers reported about Marianne's life: her swift ascent in the London art world, her much-scrutinized romance with her gallerist. If she wants to discover the truth about her death, Rowan needs to know more. Was Marianne in distress? In danger? And so she begins to seek clues -- in Marianne's latest work, her closest relationships, and her new friendship with an iconoclastic fellow artist.

But the deeper Rowan goes, the more sinister everything seems. And a secret in the past only she knows makes her worry about her own fate . . .

The Crime at Black Dudley by Margery AllinghamThe Crime at Black Dudley by Margery Allingham - EGalley for review through NetGalley - (The Book Depository // Amazon) - Release date:  ??? - This is actually a re-release - it was first published in 1967 and was the first Campion mystery - The newest one by the publisher I received this from was May, 2015, so I'll go with that as the release date

Goodreads description:
Classic Crime from the Golden Age, the first in the Albert Campion Series. Margery Allingham is J.K. Rowling's favourite Golden Age author.A weekend away in a country estate, an ancient ritual with a dagger, a missing document and a murder in the dark. "The Crime at Black Dudley" is English Classic Crime of the first order and introduces Albert Campion, the eccentric and beloved detective of Allingham's Campion series. The Black Dudley is an ancient, remote mansion inhabited by recluse, Colonel Combe, but owned by Wyatt Petrie, a young academic who decides to revive his property with a weekend party to which he invites his friends and colleagues. Among the guests is George Abbershaw, a renowned doctor and pathologist who is occasionally summoned by Scotland Yard to help with consulting mysterious deaths. Abbershaw hopes that the leisurely weekend at Black Dudley will help him to get acquainted with red-haired Meggie Oliphant whom he quietly admires. Little does he suspect that instead he will be involved in a series of extraordinary and dangerous incidents which unravel one by one in the gloomy mansion and split the party. It all begins with a seemingly innocent ritual-game, played in Black Dudley for generations, in which a jewelled dagger is passed between the guests in the darkness. The young visitors are intrigued and eager to play, but when the lights are restored it becomes apparent that Colonel Combe has fallen ill. In the commotion of helping the invalid gentleman to his bedroom the dagger disappears and the Colonel is soon pronounced dead. Although Colonel's closest friends claim that he suffered from a weak heart for many years, Abbershaw begins to suspect that there is more to his death. Soon the guests realise that the petrol has been drained from every single car and the party is imprisoned within the manor of Black Dudley with a murderer among them.Luckily for Abbershaw, among the guests is Albert Campion - a garrulous and affable party-crasher with a great knack for solving mysteries and interrogating suspects."The Crime at Black Dudley," first published in 1929, is the first novel which introduces Margery Allingham's amiable sleuth - Albert Campion.

A Place Called Winter by Patrick GaleA Place Called Winter by Patrick Gale - EGalley for review through NetGalley - (The Book Depository // Amazon) - Paperback release date:  March 22, 2016 - This was released in hardback in March, 2015

Goodreads description:
A privileged elder son, and stammeringly shy, Harry Cane has followed convention at every step. Even the beginnings of an illicit, dangerous affair do little to shake the foundations of his muted existence - until the shock of discovery and the threat of arrest cost him everything.

Forced to abandon his wife and child, Harry signs up for emigration to the newly colonised Canadian prairies. Remote and unforgiving, his allotted homestead in a place called Winter is a world away from the golden suburbs of turn-of-the-century Edwardian England. And yet it is here, isolated in a seemingly harsh landscape, under the threat of war, madness and an evil man of undeniable magnetism that the fight for survival will reveal in Harry an inner strength and capacity for love beyond anything he has ever known before.

In this exquisite journey of self-discovery, loosely based on a real life family mystery, Patrick Gale has created an epic, intimate human drama, both brutal and breathtaking. It is a novel of secrets, sexuality and, ultimately, of great love.
