Friday Book Blogger Hop hosted by A Coffee Addicted Writer

"The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended December 31, 2012.

I didn't want the hop to come to end, and with Jennifer's permission, I’ll relaunch the Book Blogger Hop on Friday, February 15th, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt just like before. The hop's purpose will remain the same as it will give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog."

Every week is a chance to visit a new blog or more, find connections, and learn about new books to read!

This week's question:

"During the holidays there were hundreds of blog hops with giveaways and prizes. How did you keep track of if you what, if anything, you won?"
I enter sweepstakes as a hobby.  Last year was a bear, with a horrible schedule and a lot of things going on that kept me from entering, or reading, or blogging.  Couple that with problems with my only PC, and computer time was almost nil.  By the end of November/beginning of December, my computer was finally working correctly, my contract at my job came to an end, and I started back on my reading and other hobbies.

I keep track of my entries with a program called "Sweep"; it's available for free at .  It's pretty handy-dandy - the most time you take with it is initially setting it up (clearing out the old entries that come pre-loaded into it, setting up your own groups) and initially inputting the info for each sweepstakes.  Once you get it set up, though, it's a breeze to click through to the sweepstakes want to enter. I also use it to keep track of my wins (I create a group for each month and enter each sweepstakes in as a win comes in).

NOTE:  If you're running Windows 8, and you want to utilize the Sweep! program, you will have to right-click on the Sweep! icon and click "Run as Administrator" for it to work properly.

I didn't enter a lot of blog sweepstakes (mostly because with my computer problems, I had to reinstall Windows 7, and, when that didn't work, I upgraded to Windows 8 [which kind of bites on a regular desktop - lots of freezes and such]), so I lost all of my bookmarks and, of course, my locally-installed copy of Sweep (you should always back it up, but ... well, I don't always do what I'm supposed to do). Even so, I still managed to win a few great prizes in December:

1. 5,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles (ARV $147.50) from the American Airlines Merry Miles IWG (not yet received)
2. A Fanatics $25 Gift Card from the Orville Redenbacher Get Your Orville Ready IWG (not yet received)
3. A prize pack of 3 Carmex Original Tubs and 4 Moisture Plus sticks (I'm thinking this was a Twitter contest, since I was notified via Twitter) - $18
4. A Scosche BoomBottle from the Gunaxin Holiday Gift Guide - $149.99
5. A Black & Decker blower/vacuum/mulcher (ARV $79.99) from Jet Magazine
6. The entire 13 piece China Glaze Happy HoliGlaze Collection from Put a Little Umbrella in It (blog) - $60
7. LEGO Duplo Jake and the Never Land Pirates Jake’s Pirate Ship Bucky from Time to Play Mag $40
8. Pac-Man and The Ghostly Adventures X-Box Game (approx. retail value $40) from WBNX (local television station)

Total ARV for December - $560.48

Book Beginnings on Fridays is hosted by Rose City Reader.

From the blog:

"Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name."

The book I'm currently reading is on my Nook, and I'm not certain where it is at the moment (my son and daughter like to "borrow" it and not put it back where they found it), so I just grabbed a book on my desk that I will be reading for the upcoming Bout of Books read-a-thon.
My book beginning (click the cover for Goodreads page):

The Three Weissmanns of Westport by Cathleen Schine
The Three Weissmanns of Westport by Cathleen Schine

When Joseph Weissmann divorced his wife, he was seventy-eight years old and she was seventy-five. He announced his decision in the kitchen of their apartment on the tenth floor of a large, graceful Central Park West building built at the turn of the last century, the original white tiles of the kitchen still gleaming on the walls around them.  Joseph, known as Joe to his colleagues at work but always called Joseph by his wife, said the words "irreconcilable differences," and saw real confusion in his wife's eyes.

Goodreads description:

A New York Times Best Seller
A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice

Betty Weissmann has just been dumped by her husband of forty-eight years. Exiled from her elegant New York apartment by her husband’s mistress, she and her two middle-aged daughters, Miranda and Annie, regroup in a run-down Westport, Connecticut, beach cottage. In Schine’s playful and devoted homage to Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, the impulsive sister is Miranda, a literary agent entangled in a series of scandals, and the more pragmatic sister is Annie, a library director, who feels compelled to move in and watch over her capricious mother and sister. Schine’s witty, wonderful novelis simply full of pleasure: the pleasure of reading, the pleasure of Austen, and the pleasure that the characters so rightly and humorously pursue….An absolute triumph” (The Cleveland Plain Dealer)

  2. Wow, with all those technical problems it was okay to have missed the sweeps I think. It was a super busy time I think. I didn't enter any just because it was too time consuming but also because I was part of the giving so it felt strange to enter them anyways.

But wow that book's first sentence was just intriguing! I think I just found another book to add to my list. :)

Sorry that I had to re-enable word verification, but without it, there was far too much spam coming in - the only other option would have been to require only registered (Google, OpenID, etc.) comments, which might require you, the commenter, to go through even MORE steps just to comment!
