Dewey's 24 Hour Read-A-Thon - April 21, 2012 - Starting Post and Updates

Dewey's 24 Hour Read-A-Thon
Dewey's 24 Hour Read-A-Thon actually started a few hours ago, so I'm a bit late getting this up!  Lots of prizes, mini-challenges, and reading fun to be had!   I'll be simply updating this post as I go, with the newest items first, rather than putting up separate posts every hour or so.

1:03 AM (Hour 18)

Picturrific Memory hosted at Stella Matutina:

I want you to step away from your current read just long enough to find a picture that somehow relates to the book. Find an image that makes you think of the story, the characters, the book's theme, a vital element... whatever works for you.

I'm currently reading "White Horse" by Alex Adams:

This is a dystopian tale of our world recently decimated by a genetic mutation called White Horse.  This stark aerial image gives the kind of weird, other-worldly feeling engendered for me by my reading so far of this novel.

ANOTHER monochrome sort cover ... hmmm .. next up is "The Odditorium", which has a colorful color (if I can stay awake long enough, that is).

10:03 PM (Hour 14)

Mid-Event Survey hosted at Dewey's 24-Hour Readathon:

1) How are you doing? Sleepy? Are your eyes tired?
Not sleepy at all; it's not even 10 PM and my day hasn't been all reading :)

2) What have you finished reading?
I finished "Hush, Hush" by Becca Fitzpatrick

3) What is your favorite read so far?
I'm currently reading "Bloodland" by Alan Glynn, and I'm liking it better than the first title

4) What about your favorite snacks?
I've been keeping it light, but I DID have a scoop of vanilla ice cream with warm caramel topping!  Yumm!

5) Have you found any new blogs through the readathon? If so, give them some love!

I have only visited a few so far (and yes, I've found a couple of new ones - Naida at ... the bookworm ... for one :)

Weird Sisters Mini-Challenge hosted at Just One More Thing:

The Challenge is to tell us how you share your love of books with family or friends who live at a distance. You can submit a picture, humorous anecdote, or just a description of how you keep that reading connection going.

Actually, I don't have a ton of friends and family that read who live at a distance, but I do share books and blog posts on Facebook.

PROGRESS REPORT:

Time Read Since Last Update:  3 hours
Pages Read Since Last Update: 274 pages
Books Read Since Last Update: Finished Hush, Hush by Becka Fitzpatrick (215 pages out of 391); started Bloodland by Alan Glynn (on page 59)

Notice the sepia tone on both covers?  I didn't plan that .. really.  :)

 12:24 PM

Mini-Challenge 1:  Reading in Translation hosted by Reading Through Life

One book that I'd like to read in its original language is one that is on my TBR shelf (if only I actually KNEW Spanish):

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Original cover
(I believe)

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
 Barnes and Noble
Leatherbound Classic
Now, I'm actually off to read!  :)

11:57 AM (Starting Post):

I have a bit of a busy day ahead, but I still hope to finish Hush Hush by Becca Fitzgerald (I'm currently on page 176 of this very quick read), and get through at least two of the following review titles:  Bloodland by Alan Glynn, The Odditorium by Melissa Pritchard, and White Horse by Alex Adams.

I also have to get down to my local library today to pick up books to distribute to a nearby Volunteers of America site for World Book Night on April 23rd.  I chose to distribute The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks to the men living in the transitional housing unit there.

My introduction:

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?

From Cleveland, Ohio ... I'll pretty much be sticking to the couch instead of being tempted to read outside; it looks to be a wet one out there today

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?

I'm thinking probably White Horse, but all of the books in my list seem to be very good reads.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?

Actually, hmmm ... I didn't really prepare well for this read-a-thon; I think I'll likely have to run out in the middle and pick some snacks up  - crunchy, healthy things like apples, since I'm trying to lose a bit of poundage :)

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!

I'm a mom of four - three girls ages 28, 23, and 18 and one 11-year-old boy.  I like reading (duh!), volunteering, anything textile art-related (knitting, crocheting, quilting, cross-stitch), and I'm just coming out of a stretch of on-again, off-again (mostly off-again) employment, so I'm trying to get into a new routine (which is why I'm loving having this excuse to simply do almost nothing today)

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?

Well, I didn't plan for this one at all - this morning, I simply pulled the first three books off the top of my review pile, so I'll be flying by the seat of my pants.  I DO plan to visit at least 5 other participants every couple of hours to cheer them on, even though I'm not an official cheerleader this go-round.  :)

For anyone else that's participating, good luck!  Have fun!
Julie

Taking a break to stop by and say hi and hope the reading is still going strong. I multi-tasked and listened to did audiobooks today. Now I'm moving to print books and the couch.
