Once Upon A Readathon Starts Now!

STICKY until 12:00 AM on July 14th; scroll down for new content

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon

What's this?  Two readathons in a row?

(Yes, I signed up for both without realizing they ran back-to-back).

The Once Upon a Readathon is being hosted by Candace at Candace's Book Blog,  Lori at Pure Imagination, and Angela at Reading Angel.  It runs from 12:01 am on July 11th to 11:59 on July 13th.

UPDATES:

July 13, 6:27 PM

What happens when you're walking around the corner to the convenience store, and you feel something slam HARD into the back of your leg?

If you're me, you turn around to see a very little kid stammering out "I'm sorry; I'm sorry" as blood pools into your shoe from the almost 3-inch gash that is now in the back of your leg from his bike running into you (apparently he was pedaling with his head down?).  Then you thank goodness that the fist you brought round to connect with whoever slammed into you was aimed way too high to actually hit the mark.  THEN you look back down and see MORE blood.  THEN you ask one of the grownups who were apparently "with" the little boy (riding way ahead and in the street instead of WITH him), "Have you even taught him that he's supposed to go AROUND people or at least let them know he's coming up on them?" as the guy shrugs and tells the little guy to "Come on" without even acknowledging his part in the now pretty copious amount of BLOOD pooling out of the shoe and onto the sidewalk.  Then you realize, "Oh, my goodness, I'm actually hurt pretty bad,", and you limp back around the corner to your house, run upstairs and wet a clean cloth to wash up both of your legs (and feet), and use another cloth to actually drip enough water over the cut for you to see ... a cut that can't be taken care of with a butterfly bandage.  You then drive yourself to the Emergency Room, where the nearest available parking lot is actually across the street, and limp your happy way through the garage, up and down the elevator, and through the various hospital wings until you finally make it to the ER ... where ... three-and-a-half hours, four lidocaine shots, one tetanus shot, and seven.stitches.later, you pick up your son from day camp and come home, wishing that you actually had something stronger in the house to drink than Snapple Iced Tea.

So, not a lot of reading got done today, but I'll try to get in as much as I can by midnight!

I finished Odd Jobs, which was really really good!  I found myself with my heart in my throat in a few places.  The reviews on this one seem to be mixed, but I'm looking at the dates, and the "bleh" reviews seem to be from when it was first self-pubbed (before the editors at Sterling House got to it).  It's gritty, but totally absorbing.  I could see it being a one-sitting book as the James Patterson blurb states, unfortunately, I didn't have time today to read ANYthing in one sitting!

Mini-Challenge from The Bookish Type:

Pick any book from your readathon pile and write a fake synopsis based solely on the cover. The
synopsis does not have to be related to the actual book at all, just the pretty, pretty cover.

When Veronica is pressured by her friends into attending a Period masquerade ball, little does she know that an overheard conversation will pull her into an international espionage scheme.  Hiding around corners and wondering how fast she can run in crinoline causes Veronica to question her safe existence.  When she runs right into the arms of a dark stranger, she begins to wonder if her staid academic life will actually be enough for her and if she will be able to live long enough to find out.

(and this is why I'm a reader and not a writer!)

I was able to get in a little bit more reading before bed last night; today I have quite a bit of running around to do - Michael's for some project supplies; grocery store for some of the food on my diet menu; the Farmer's Market, and Bebe Boy James has Youth Group in a little while and Boy Scouts tonight, so I'm not certain how much reading I'll get done between that and blog work, but we'll see!

Mini-Challenge at IB Book Blogging:

Mini Challenge Question 1:
What is your favorite type of myth (Greek, Roman, Egyptian etc)?

I love both Greek and Roman mythology, although I'd have to say Greek mythology more, since they're the ones that actually started it, and the Roman myths are built on theirs!

Mini Challenge Question 2:
What is your favorite book with some type of mythology in it?

I've actually read quite a few this year - I think so far my favorite would be Darkness Becomes Her.

I read for 35 minutes last night, and am just getting settled in to read more today.  I realized that I needed to add two additional books to the beginning of the list as well, so I just added them to the end of the list, even though they'll have to go before the others.

START UP POST:

What will I be reading?  I usually only pick personal books for readathons, but I'm going to change up this time.  My review books are VERY FAR BEHIND, so I will alternate between the eGalleys and hardcopy review books.  Here they are (in no particular order, and, no!  I don't plan on reading all of them; this is just my list to choose from; clicking the cover will take you to the Goodreads page):

Clean by Amy Reed Never Knowing by Chevy StevensDie For Me by Amy Plum
Your Voice in My Head by Emma Forrest
The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross The Sentimentalists by Johanna Skibsrud
The Summer We Came to Life by Deborah Cloyed Killed at the Whim of a Hat by Colin Cotterill Before I Go To Sleep by S. J. Watson
Mercy by Rebecca Lim This Burns My Heart by Samuel Park Vanished by Sheela Chari
A Young Wife by Pam Lewis Also Known as Rowan Pohl by Ralph Fletcher Jamrach's Menagerie by Carol Birch
Odd Jobs by Ben LiebermanDreams of the Dead by Perri O'Shaughnessy

I plan to get through at least 6 of them (maybe if I really push it, 8)!  Wish me luck!

Julie
